Central Park is Peterborough’s most prestigious public park and a long-time Green Flag award winner, offering a delightful mix of formal gardens, play zones, sensory spaces, sports facilities, and a café—all situated just north of the city centre.
This inviting green oasis features a sunken garden and sensory garden with fragrant plantings, a paddling pool and sandpit for younger visitors, an aviary, bowling greens, croquet lawn, hard and grass tennis courts, outdoor gym, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, and jogging paths—all in a beautifully mature landscaped setting.
Park history goes back to when it opened by subscription in Easter 1877, before the council took stewardship on a 999-year lease in 1908. A charming highlight: the park is home to “Jimmy the Donkey,” a WWI mascot buried on site, with a plaque marking the spot.
