Odd Oaks by Nicholas Pope (1982)

Address

Thorpe Meadows Peterborough PE3 6GA

Artist

Nicholas Pope

Four giant wooden “acorns” lie nestled into the landscape, echoing the trees and natural forms around them. Once sited in Werrington Shopping Centre, Odd Oaks was later moved to Thorpe Meadows, where it has been left to age naturally – slowly returning to the environment it celebrates.

About the Artist: Nicholas Pope (b. 1949) represented Britain at the 1980 Venice Biennale before shifting from large-scale wooden forms to works in ceramics, glass, and metal that often explore ritual and morality.

This sculpture is one of several artworks that make up the Thorpe Meadows Sculpture Trail, part of the Nene Park Sculpture Collection. Set alongside the River Nene and Peterborough Rowing Lake, the trail invites visitors to discover contemporary sculptures in a beautiful riverside setting. Whether you’re walking, cycling, or picnicking nearby, each piece adds an extra layer of creativity to the landscape, making the journey as rewarding as the destination.
