Housed in a former Bedford Level Corporation building, Thorney Heritage Museum tells the remarkable story of how this fenland ‘island’ was transformed from marsh to farmland. The museum charts the village’s origins as a Benedictine monastic settlement through to its Victorian reinvention under the Dukes of Bedford, who introduced model farms, worker housing, and new agricultural techniques.
Through artefacts, photographs, and interactive displays, visitors can explore the engineering feats of drainage, the daily life of fenland communities, and the role of Thorney in shaping the wider Peterborough area. The museum also preserves records and stories from local families, capturing the enduring relationship between people and the reclaimed land.
